How do you deal with boredom?
There are many people struggling with chronic boredom all over the world. So, what exactly is boredom and how can you navigate beyond it?
Wikipedia defines Boredom as an emotional and occasionally psychological state experienced when an individual is left without anything in particular to do, is not interested in their surroundings, or feels that a day or period is dull or tedious. This is a feeling that we all are familiar with. It is part of life. But sometimes it’s a prodrome of something deeper that needs tending.
What are the causes of boredom?
Just as Wikipedia defined boredom as nothing having what to do, some people are of this same mindset which I totally disagree with. I don’t believe that it is caused by a lack of things you want to do. Rather, I’m of the opinion that people have mislabeled boredom to disguise a different problem. Hence, this is the reason most attempts to stop boredom don’t work because they don’t address the real problem.
Here are some reasons why boredom manifests itself:
It could be a result of a traumatic experience. For example, being raised in a chaotic household can make a child feel unsafe. The lack of these safety triggers overwhelming and conflicting emotions, for example, rage and fear. To survive alone, a child’s mind compartmentalizes away the “bad” feelings to carry on with life. So, disconnecting from emotions, as much as it spares us pain, can also lead to boredom.
The sense of underachieving in one’s life. In this instance, boredom diagnosis the underlying need to find interests and novelty in our life.
It also limits individuals’ access to knowing what they truly want and need. To simply put, when you feel that the goal is unattainable, the person ends up losing interest or desire to complete the goal.
Procrastination is also another chief player that can result in boredom.
Lack of Motivation. Not having the right attitude or the motivation to do what you should do to eliminate boredom. In some cases, this problem can be overcome by using a simple motivation trick. In other instances, these need to be addressed with some serious reflection, goal setting, and reestablishing your priorities.
Tips to deal with boredom
Here are some tips I’ve found to help deal with the real culprit behind a feeling of boredom and get back to your normal self:
Getting creative is a good way to start. There are many ways one can be creative such as; reading a book, painting, or sketching something, coloring is a great way to lessen boredom, writing a list e.g places you want to visit, goals you want to achieve), doing some creative writing (i.e. start a blog), etc.
Making sure that you’re productive when you are bored. Most times we feel unmotivated but staying true to the project at hand or trying to complete a certain task can affect our motivation as long as we are able to stay focused. Also, getting a daily workout can help keep our body and mind active. I know that we must have heard this a thousand times but I will still say it. Learning a new skill can help you stay productive when you are bored.
Interacting with other people can not be overemphasized. Playing online games with friends or board games like chess is a great way to escape boredom. Going out to cinemas or hanging out in restaurants can are other ways to eliminate boredom.
Find ways to have fun. You can take dancing classes, or learn how to bake or watch funny videos online or have a look through your old photo albums. As long as you are doing something fun, you can’t be bored.
Make sure that you avoid boredom. How can you do that? Simple! By avoiding dull environments or people that are bored, by getting off the couch and taking a walk instead, by not daydreaming, by socializing (i.e. joining a club or a youth group), by taking short breaks so that your tasks don’t become mundane. Do this and you can avoid boredom.
At this junction, I believe that we all are aware that the human brain and body crave stimulation and new experiences. Don't just go about doing the exact thing over and over again, or from doing nothing at all. This will result in you being bored. So, it is best to keep the body and mind active by doing new things or finding new ways to do things.
